The state of Arizona has many wonderful rural areas, delightful small towns and bustling cities that are home to some of America’s most industrious and charming citizens. Look at Glendale, for example. Less than 10 miles northwest of Phoenix, Glendale is one of the nation’s finest districts for sports, entertainment, culture, industry and trade. As a local HOA management company in Glendale, AZ, we see the city as something more. It’s a strong community steeped in rich history and looking to a bright future. Let’s take a look at the expansion of Glendale and its importance to the area over the years.
The Glendale area’s first settlers in 1884 were Hispanic. In 1886, however, the Arizona Canal was complete, which ensured a stable water supply to the area. With the completion of the canal, the area saw an influx of farming families move into the area. It wasn’t until 1892, that Glendale Temperance Colony was officially founded by the W.J. Murphy’s New England Land Company upon completion of a survey and plat for Glendale’s first residential area. In 1895, the Santa Fe Railroad Depot was established along Grand Avenue in Glendale, which solidified the community as a place for farming and industry.
In 1910, the Town of Glendale was officially incorporated and the community grew rapidly. Over the next several decades, Glendale saw its first high school built, its first library, the founding of the Chamber of Commerce and its own newspaper. By World War II, Glendale was an agricultural mecca, separate from Phoenix, with its own downtown banks, department stores, groceries, theaters and restaurants.
1940 to Today
During and after World War II, Glendale expanded its economic structure beyond agriculture to include several important industries, including Honeywell’s aerospace facility. Glendale is also home to several education centers and sports centers, including Glendale Arena, the Westgate City Center sports and retail megacomplex and the University of Phoenix Stadium.
With the creation of Glendale’s new City Center in the early 2000s, along with being home to one of the best stadiums in the country, Glendale has become a vibrant, multicultural area with a booming industry and a wide variety of cultural, sport and entertainment experiences. Looking to the future, Glendale is quickly becoming a top travel destination as well. With the creation of the new Desert Diamond West Valley Casino and the Ritz-Carlton Paradise Valley Resort, Glendale’s future is looking bright. Residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy an improved infrastructure and living experience!
